The Evolution Of The Work Desk
There have been so many advances in technology over the past 35 years, from the advances in computers and laptops to the near total abolishment of hardware such as the fax machine and storage units. Nearly everything you need is now inside your laptop, you can make phonecalls, send emails, photos and videos, store all of your documents. Space on your desk is truly inspired by technology. The video below will either send you on a nostalgia trip or make you wonder how they coped 'back in the day' with so many different devices.
"Evolution of the Desk" was set up by the Harvard Innovation Lab. The goal is to illustrate the impact that technology has had on our lives over the last 35 years. A cluttered desk, complete with a rolodex, a file cabinet, and a fax machine, transforms into a much cleaner, simpler surface consisting of only a laptop and a mobile phone. Of course, the constant in the video are the sunglasses, the sunglasses persist throughout the years.
All of the vintage items featured in this video are authentic. The Macintosh Classic, corded phone, fax machine, globe, corkboard, Polaroid camera, and rolodex were all purchased through individual sellers on Ebay. The rest of the items were found lying around in basements, storage units, and garage sales. And the sunglasses? Those were easy since we actually still own a pair.
How has your desk changed over the years?
